Rumors have said that the original cross is placed in another wooden cross for protection from the people who want to get it because they believed that it has miraculous healing powers. However, others have also said that the original cross has been destroyed after Ferdinand Magellan fought against Lapu-Lapu and his men in Mactan Island (part of Cebu) to spread Christianity. Lapu-Lapu was the ruler of Mactan who has 1,500 men fought Ferdinand Magellan with 49 Spanish men on April 27, 1521.

Histories told that Magellan was looking for the Spice Islands that is now part of Indonesia known as Maluku or Moluccas islands.
